as if..., as though....

She looked as if she were about to burst into tears, when all at once she burst out laughing as though she had gone mad.

( 막 눈물이 쏫아질듯 하더니! )

그녀는 마치 당장이라도 눈물을 터뜨릴듯 하더니,

그때 갑자기 마치 미쳤기라도 했듯이 웃음을 터뜨렸다.

여기서 as if 는 마치 ...한듯이, 마치 ....인듯이 란뜻의 부사절을

만드는 접속사 입니다. as if 와 as though는 같은 뜻으로 바꿔써도

괜찮습니다.

참고로, as if, as though 절은 보통 가정법을 씁니다.즉,

가정법 현재는 과거동사, 가정법 과거는 과거완료의 형태로

동사가 쓰입니다.

본문에서 as if she were.....는 과거가 아니라, 현재의 가정법으로

그녀가 (지금) 막 눈물을 흘리려는 참이다 의 뜻이고,
